Ling Shan Hermit: What was happening in the world when Donald Trump stepped off Air Force One?

As Donald Trump, along with his wife, stepped off Air Force One for the first time as President and set foot on British soil, waving and smiling at the crowd, at the same moment, in a tropical rainforest in Sri Lanka, a Rusty Spotted Cat was making its solitary way along the damp forest floor. Sunlight filtered through the gaps in the leaves to fall on it, as it darted through damp tree hollows and jumped over weeds. Suddenly, it stopped, its ears pricked up alertly, its eyes widened, and its nose continually sniffing. This creature, known as the smallest cat in the world, seemed to have discovered something.  At the same time, a battle was raging in Aleppo, the second largest city in Syria. Nineteen-year-old Assam was hiding in a ruin - formerly a large supermarket - clutching a gun. He had been injured in the leg, and not far from him was a dried, blackened pool of blood and an open can of beef. He heard sporadic gunshots and screams in the distance along with his own breathing and h

Ling Shan Hermit: No One Can Live Without Others

In the late 19th century, some states in the western United States began to experiment with giving women limited voting rights. In the first year of the 1920s, the U.S. Congress passed the 19th Amendment, and American women officially obtained the right to vote. In the more than a hundred years after women obtained the right to vote, the world has undergone earth-shaking changes. Many women have begun to step out of their homes and work in society. The ripple effects of this change are complex, but that's not our focus today. Being able to earn money and support a family has gradually led many women to feel that they are completely equal to men. To the point where today we often hear many women say, "I can live completely independently of men." We won't discuss how far this statement is from reality for now. Personally, I would very much like to believe this is true, but so far, I haven't found a woman on this planet who can truly live completely independently of

The Hermit of Ling Mountain: The Internal Combustion Engine, Electromagnetic Theory, and "Do not do unto others what you do not want done to yourself"

In the educational system we have received, traditional Chinese culture has been continually criticized as backward. Throughout our upbringing, textbooks, magazines, internet, and television have been constantly telling us that traditional Chinese culture did not invent the telephone, the internal combustion engine, antibiotics, or discover graphene or electromagnetic theory, and hence it has made no contribution to global civilization. We did not produce an Einstein, an Alexander Fleming, a Bill Gates, or a Steve Jobs; instead we have grandiloquent figures like Zhuangzi and Confucius, and Zen masters whose teachings are obscure to many. Their philosophies bear no relevance to programming or curing AIDS - this has been the collective understanding of almost all individuals considering themselves educated and cultured over the past two to three centuries. Because those with the power of discourse have continuously told us this, and those whom we perceive as the smartest of human elites
